Spanish Serrano ham
“Serrano ham is really Spanish. Spanish food is different from Dutch food. We have more diversity. I brought a two kilo Serrano ham with me. It’s not enough for one year; my parents gave me another one when they visited Maastricht in autumn. And after Christmas I’ll bring another one to Maastricht.
“I eat the ham every day, it goes very well on toast or sandwiches. The flavour is lovely – it’s a bit salty but you still taste the meat. Eating Serrano ham gives me a sense of being at home.”
My Catholic student group
“I miss my Catholic student group; it’s a subgroup of a very large one. We met every week. For me it’s like meeting God every week. It gives me the opportunity to think and reflect on my religion and its relationship with everyday life. God is the one who’s guiding me through all my decisions. He’s behind every decision I make. In times of struggle he gives me comfort and a better perspective.
“Every Saturday afternoon there’s an English mass in the Onze Lieve Vrouwe church. I’ve been there a couple of times.”
