Igor Petrenko is a second-year UCM student from Belgium
“My family is half Polish and half Belgian. I was born in Belgium, then lived in Russia for a few years and spent the last twelve years in Ukraine. There, I went to an international high school. I made some good friends there, but it’s hard to keep in touch as they now live all over the world. Most of their parents have also moved, so we can’t even meet up when I’m back in Ukraine for a week or so.
“I also miss some of the friends of my parents. We saw them a lot; they’d drop by on weekends. Luckily, I can still see them when I’m back home.”
Reminder of home
“I always wear this bracelet. It’s very simple; a leather band with a stone. I bought it in Ukraine. I used to wear a necklace too, but that broke. It feels weird, not having it on. I only take the bracelet off when I go to sleep. I’ve been living in Maastricht for two years now – I consider this my home – but the bracelet is a reminder of where I come from.”
