Netherlands. Who doesn’t know the famous book The Assault? Writer Harry Mulisch, one of the most important post-World War II authors in the Netherlands, died of cancer at the age of 83 last Saturday. Together with Gerard Reve and Willem Frederik Hermans, he is considered one of the greatest modern Dutch writers. The Second World War is a recurring theme in his work. De Aanslag (The Assault), published in 1982, has been translated into many languages and the film version won an Oscar as best foreign film. Mulisch’s novel De ontdekking van de Hemel (1992) was also filmed in 2001 as The Discovery of Heaven by Jeroen Krabbé.
