UM sounds the alarm for house parties

MAASTRICHT. “What if a fire were to break out in a house where two hundred people have gathered,” says Pascal Breuls, director of Student Services. The police regularly receive reports about illegal house parties, in particular at the end of block periods. Maastricht University makes students aware of the risks.

The UM also has employees who are refugees or children of refugees. In this Observant series, a number of them will tell their story. “Was that easy?” “A bit”

“Was that easy?” “A bit”

“It’s irregular.” It’s Tuesday afternoon at the Maastricht University Language Centre, and the students sound resigned. They may have only just started this Dutch course, but they already know all too well that Dutch grammar is teeming with exceptions. A few weeks ago seven Syrian refugees joined the course; five in one grou...
