Dutch more positive about EU, just one in five back a Nexit

THE NETHERLANDS.The Dutch have become more positive about the European Union, with 46% now thinking membership is ‘a good thing’, according to new research by the government’s social policy advisory unit SCP.

At the same time, the percentage of people who support a Nexit – the Netherlands pulling out of the EU – has gone down from 24% to 20%, the SCP said.

SCP researcher Paul Dekker told the Volkskrant results are ‘remarkable’ given that many people had predicted a snowball effect after Britain voted in favour of leaving the EU. Nevertheless, Dutch sentiment could change if the effects of the Brexit are less damaging to the British economy than forecast, he said.

The survey also showed people are more positive about the government – a rise from 41% to 47% – and parliament (up from 45% to 49%). The SCP carries out research on people’s attitudes to major issues four times a year.
