Tapijn carré buildings opened

MAASTRICHT. There is still a big excavator in the yard and some builders are still walking around here and there through the building, but last Monday the first batch of UM moved into the carré buildings on the Prins Bisschopsingel. This included the University Library and SBE.

The official opening was last Tuesday, but the first students were already studying in the coloured study booths of the new Tapijn Learning Spaces on Monday. “The first student was at the door at nine-thirty this morning,” says Marijke van Kempen, co-ordinator of the University Library information team. She is wearing a winter coat because it is chilly. “The heating hasn’t been properly adjusted yet.” And as the coffee machines are still being installed in the sun lounge one floor up, free coffee has been brought over from the University Library on the Grote Looiersstraat.

This Monday afternoon, the desk in the ‘plinth’ – the dug-out corridor connecting the quadrangle buildings – will be occupied by Van Kempen and a colleague, but eventually student assistants will run the new Tapijn Learning Spaces. There will be a total of 160 study spaces, spread across the study areas and booths downstairs in the plinth, as well as some spaces upstairs in the sun lounge. They replace the study spaces in the Student Services Centre, which are closed from this week onwards.

“These booths are really nice,” says second-year bachelor’s student of Economics and Business Economics, Virginie Dejace. Her coat is covering her legs because of the temperature. Teething troubles, she says. It’s not stopping her. “I have just sent my fellow students a message telling them to come here too. It is wonderfully peaceful here.”

“It is busier than I had expected,” says master’s student of International Business, Bram Boots. “But compared to the University Library, it is nice and quiet. It is almost impossible to find a space there. I hope it will stay as quiet here.” There are no catering facilities yet, “but they will come. I am certainly going to study here more often.”
