Shrimp hurricane at Wok To Go

Work like a slave, eat like a king

26-08-2015

The fast-food restaurant Wok To Go is right in the center of the Markt. It is a chain with lots of branches spread across the Netherlands. I think this inexpensive and impersonal little hideout fits well with people’s current lifestyle and welcomes not only students but also citizens of Maastricht.
Once you enter this small take-away restaurant, you cannot miss the large menu board on the front wall showing a variety of options. I was immediately approached by an irritated and only-Dutch-speaking waiter, who was wearing a ‘comfortable’ tracksuit, and ordered my dinner.

The pork dumpling soup (Wan Tan soup) with intensive Chinese spices (chopped fresh ginger, wine vinegar, red pepper and bamboo extract) warmed me up on the rainy summer day, however, it was quite watery. The main dish Garden Shrimp with noodles was a large portion of noodles with a lot of fresh (not only Chinese) vegetables mixed with a sweet chili sauce. I could also have taken basmati rice, but I have heard from my friend that it is usually served overcooked and thus ruins your gastronomic experience.

What I really did not appreciate was the way in which my main dish was served. The tiny impractical box was first filled with noodles at the bottom and covered with the prawns and vegetables. When I was trying to mix my dinner in this take-away box, almost half of the content fell out. My first sider, prawn sate, was six steamed prawns soaked in a spicy chili sauce and spiked on two wooden sticks. Its crunchy, firm and crisp texture fitted well with my main dish. The second sider, the curry surprise, was not a surprise at all. Those triangle shaped spring rolls were too oily for my taste. And if you have a sweet tooth, you will be disappointed since the menu does not offer any desserts.
Wok To Go has reasonable prices and lunch menus offered are quickly served. During lunchtime on a working day, count on a small queue sometimes even outside of the restaurant’s door.
