Euregional opera and musical theatre festival

25-02-2010

After surviving (or avoiding) Carnival and its characteristic music, costumes and beer-drinking, you might be wanting to indulge in one of the ‘higher’ art forms, like opera or musical theatre. The Euregional opera and music theatre festival is currently being organised by the Theatre aan het Vrijthof and Opera Zuid, featuring entire operas as well as piano concerts and pieces of various compositions. For example, for those who have mastered the local dialect, it might be interesting – and surreal – to see Julius Caesar being performed entirely in ‘Mestreechs’ by local amateurs. Alternatively, Opera Zuid will perform the famous fairytale Hansel and Gretel in English.

In spite of what the ‘Euregional’ in the title might imply, most of the performances will take place in locations across Maastricht, such as Theatre aan het Vrijthof, Opera Zuid, Kumulus and AINSI, in addition to the Aachen Theatre. Although the prices are quite high, as is the norm for opera performances, this might be an accessible way of familiarising yourself with the art form. For more information, visit www.theateraanhetvrijthof.nl or www.maastrichtnet.nl.
