Donatello’s true Italian dishes – except for its tiramisu

Work like a slave, eat like a king

For those of you looking for some exciting, authentic Italian food in Maastricht, you’ll find Donatello’s restaurant at the very top of my list. Its menu features Italian favourites including bruschetta, garlic pizza crust, antipasti, a wide range of delicious pizzas, seafood and pasta and some of the finest meat dishes available. The prices at Donatello’s are also attractive for students, with a three-course menu (from Monday to Thursday) for only €12.50. The vast indoor dining area has a relaxed atmosphere that further enhances the quality of the service and the delicious food.

I started with the Insalata Caprese (Caprese salad), a bed of sliced, seasoned tomatoes and fresh mozzarella drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. A sprig of basil on top added colour but I would have loved a little olive oil between the tomatoes and mozzarella for the true feel of the classic Italian starter. For the main, in keeping with the Italian theme, the waiter recommended the spaghetti gamberetti: pasta with king-size shrimps mixed with spicy garlic sauce, mushrooms and rocket salad. I was very satisfied with the portion size and this time – compared to my recent Pad Thai at Tasty Thai – the chilli peppers did their job. The spaghetti was perfectly al dente and mixed with the transparent sauce right before serving. I am almost never too full to satisfy my sweeter side, so I ended the night with the signature dessert of every Italian restaurant – homemade tiramisu. I was curious to compare Donatello’s tiramisu with the homemade treasure prepared by my Dutch-Italian partner, which is like heaven in your mouth. Since my standards are high, I was not fully satisfied with its overly biscuit-esque taste, with very little mascarpone between the layers.  It tasted more like a cookie with sauce rather than a creamy dessert.

Because their English was quite limited, I had to leave my comfort zone and communicate with the waiters in Dutch. Still, the service could not have been more gracious and helpful throughout the night. The casual, familial atmosphere had all the hallmarks of a cosy and comforting Italian eatery.
