MAASTRICHT. In every round of grants awarded by the Dutch funding body NWO, some universities are more successful than others. This time the discrepancies are considerable: while Utrecht landed some thirty Veni grants, Maastricht managed only three.
The lucky Maastricht recipients are Agnieszka Molinska (MUMC), Aurélie Carlier (MERLN) and Paul Smeets (SBE). Smeets studies what motivates investors to invest in society. Molinska is trying to develop markers that allow for earlier diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis, a liver disease that can be fatal. And Carlier uses computer models to investigate how the shape of a cell governs its function.
NWO awarded in july a total of 158 Veni grants. These grants, worth up to €250,000 each, are aimed at recent PhD graduates.
