In love with Maastricht

Meet the freshmen

Big sunglasses and an African head wrap. “I didn’t feel like doing my hair today”, laughs the first year student University College, “it’s easy and it looks nice.” Indeed it does. Her name is Annemiek Cuppen (18), a real Dutch name. “I’m half Dutch, half Congolese. I was born in the USA and raised in West Africa. I’m proud to be half Dutch but it’s a bit unfair to say that I’m Dutch. I don’t speak the language and I have never lived here. But I’m going to learn it. I think I will feel Dutch after three years in Maastricht.”

She did fall in love with Maastricht half a year ago, Cuppen explains. “I came to visit the city during winter break. After that I couldn’t see myself studying anywhere else. I love the atmosphere, people are walking, biking, they enjoy life. It’s a small city, a really nice one. UM is the only school outside the States I applied for. I’m happy to be here, I don’t want to study in the States at the moment because of the political situation; the whole atmosphere of moral repression and the racial issues. I don’t want to be part of it, living there is more difficult, although I haven’t been bothered, I have been lucky so far.”
