“Many Dutch people find themselves dealing with depression and thoughts of suicide or know of someone who is down. Students also suffer from depression or find the pressure of studying too high,” says Imke Borgmans, PR official and vice-chairperson of Ragweek Maastricht. That is why the board chose 113 Zelfmoordpreventie as the national good cause. It is a helpline for people considering suicide. The Wigwam Foundation is the regional good cause for 2018. This foundation organises holidays for families with physically or mentally handicapped children. “What we really liked about this is that these are holidays for the whole family, so for brothers and sisters as well,” says Borgmans.
Various student organisations are contributing. The opening party will be at Circumflex this year, international student organisation ISN is organising a singalong and there is a night-time competition at the Maastricht student tennis association Stennis, to mention only a few of the large number of Ragweek events. New this year is caterer Albron's contribution. Borgmans: “We will receive 50 cents for every specially created Ragweek roll that they sell that week.”
Faithful to tradition there will be an auction throughout the week. “We visited various businesses and collected some great items: things like vouchers for a meal or a daytrip, but also goody bags. Everyone can bid on www.ragweekauction.nl.”
