The houses will be prefabricated apartments built by C3 Living, which is part of social enterprise Rendiz from Panningen. This company implements its projects by employing refugees with temporary admission and people with disabilities. Maastricht University has given the company permission to build. The units will be erected for a period of ten years; a letting agency must still be found.
The city of Maastricht is expecting student accommodation to grow by 2,900 units over the next six years. Problems are not anticipated yet, partly because of the extra rooms at Annadal and new studios in the former Bonnefantencollege. But from 2020 more will be required.
The fact that building will commence in Randwyck is no surprise. The city has made no secret of its desire to create more student housing there, close to the Health Campus. At the beginning of 2018, there were rumours about the use of second-hand sea containers, as a quick solution for the shortage of affordable student accommodation, but because of feasibility reasons, the university decided to renovate the former nurses’ flat on the Annadal complex.
Peter Broekmans from C3 Living emphasises that his project is not about container accommodation. “We build (sections of) apartments in our factory in Panningen. They will then be assembled on location.”
The building permit application has meanwhile been submitted to city authorities.
