The ceremony, in which the future doctors also take their oath, is normally held in the Sint-Janskerk on the Vrijthof in the presence of their classmates, family, friends and with various speeches. Last Thursday, the graduates received an email from the faculty informing them that the ceremony had been moved to a lecture hall in Randwyck this month due to corona. Students would receive their diploma in four groups of 25. Without speeches, without family and friends; there would be a live stream for them.
“It is a pity that we cannot share this special moment with our loved ones,” thought Marleen Ghijsens, who started the petition. “It was still possible last September,” she says over the phone. “We understand that that’s not the case now, so we would like it to be postponed. Even if it will be a year from now.”
At the end of last week, the faculty did not seem to be interested in the student’s request, but now, the petition has now been signed about 370 times, they have responded. Those who want to move their graduation ceremony to March can do so. Obviously, the faculty cannot guarantee that it can include family and friends.
Ghijsens: “We understand that it is also a difficult situation for the university. We are pleased that they show understanding and have taken our question seriously. ”
