“I feel more like a machine than a lecturer”

MAASTRICHT. Work pressure has been a theme at Maastricht University for years. But since the start of COVID-19, it has increased exponentially across the University, both for academic and for support staff. Young lecturers at University College Maastricht seem to be having an extra hard time. There are times when they have up to four tutorial groups in a row on campus and all with the same content. Boring and exhausting, they say. At the weekends, they hold voluntary Zoom sessions for students. The dean is struggling to find a balance between the well-being of his students and lecturers. But for him the interest of the first group weighs heavier.

MAASTRICHT. Begging to be allowed to keep one’s e-mail address and UM Card, no form of support on the road to retirement, sometimes not even a farewell, and then the feeling that you are no longer part of the UM family. Retired and almost retired scientists often feel abandoned by Maastricht University. This became clear in a study carried out by professor Aagje Swinnen and three junior researchers into the experiences of the over-66 immediately prior to and after they retire.

A report that is full of ‘he’ and ‘him’ when it is about a scientific director; female students who don’t go into detail during a tutorial group meeting for fear of boring their fellow students while the men tell their stories without any diffidence; after getting a new job, to hear that you must have gotten the position because you are a woman. The fact that equality between men and women is still far off, became clear in a panel discussion by the Maastricht Young Academy last Monday.

As of 1 November, he will become rector at the Ruhr Universität in Bochum, North Rhine-Westphalia. He will not complete his third term: I wasn’t planning on leaving, but this is a unique opportunity.”
