Ecologist from Utrecht is New Scientist Science Talent 2021Pos, who researches how ecosystems change, won on the basis of votes from the public (a total of seven thousand) and the assessment of a jury of five. He received a cash prize of 2,500 euro.
So, the two researchers from Maastricht who didn’t win: biomedical scientist Aurélie Carlier designed a virtual patient, which doctors can use to get a better view of broken bones and design new therapies; neuroscientist Kay Dekkers developed a model that produces a score that gives people insight into their ‘brain health’.
Dutch and Flemish universities had put forward a total of fifty young researchers for the New Scientist Science Talent award 2021.
