Municipal councilor Alexander Lurvink (List Alexander Lurvink), who previously stood up for the students by arranging a meeting with them and the alderman, praises the action group for organizing the demonstration. “A historic moment. It is the first Maastricht room protest in history.” But they can do more, Lurvink says. “Vote in the upcoming elections. Students are severely underrepresented in the city council.”
Shortly after his speech, the group gathers their things to leave in a noisy march towards 'De Berg', the main building of the university. Because the university also has a responsibility, according to the angry students.
For the time being, the Executive Board is not doing anything with the demands of the action group, UM spokesperson Koen Augustijn said when asked. “There will be a meeting between the university and the students next Friday.”
