MAASTRICHT. “Actually, we should sing,” said president and rector Rianne Letschert last Wednesday during the most recent University Council meeting of the Education and Research Committee. Barend Last, education specialist at the university library (and seconded to the Technology Enhanced Education’ (TEE) programme), gave a presentation on Technology Enhanced Learning via Zoom. But that was not the reason that the rector thought there should be sung. No, Last won a SURF education award last Tuesday, a prize for educational innovators.

Last received the award for his work on hybrid education and learning with help of technology. “Barend knows how to explain educational theories in a humorous, passionate and knowledgeable way. During the corona crisis, he has become a figurehead of blended learning," says the jury about him. He wins a (luminous) statuette and “the honor and appreciation”, says a spokesperson of SURF. “It is a prize that is very visible for education in the Netherlands.”

In the end there was no singing, but a compliment from the rector and an applause from the U-council committee members.
