The board wants to appoint twelve employees with a combined teaching and research assignment (50/50), dean Jan Smits said at the latest faculty council meeting, where the investment plan was on the agenda. These scientists will receive an appointment for six years and in that time will have to do a PhD as well as complete their Basic Teaching Qualification.
Council chairman Roland Moerland calls the combination of 50 per cent teaching and 50 per cent PhD research “challenging”. The teaching task for PhD candidates is usually a lot less. According to dean Jan Smits, there is ultimately very little difference with a ‘normal’ PhD track: after all, the people concerned may take six years to complete it.
Furthermore, the board would like to appoint a few academic teachers, lecturers who are mainly concerned with education development and leadership, fitting in with Recognition and Rewards. Smits expects that “there will be sufficient talent present among the current lecturers”.
An amount of money will also go to administrative and support staff. New personnel policies within the framework of Recognition and Rewards requires extra investments. In addition, education planning will be technically supported. This would include a system that can help departments and schedulers with their planning.
