Landline telephone to disappear, UM employees will soon use Teams to make calls

For some users, it may take some getting used to

Before the end of 2022, landline telephones at the UM will disappear (to a large extent) and employees will make telephone calls using Microsoft Teams. To both internal and external numbers.

MS Teams is known best for its videophoning capabilities, but with the right licences you can also make phone calls, either with or without a headset. Two hundred employees from, among others, ICTS are already using it. A trial has been running at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for two weeks now. Before the end of the calendar year, all UM employees will be making phone calls using Teams, says Karin Snijders, project leader at ICTS.

The characteristic black Mitel telephones, which can still be found on most desks, can then be scrapped. Everyone will keep his or her 5-digit work number, because Teams also makes use of them. The main advantage is that employees will no longer be tied to their desks, but will be available through their work number to make or receive calls from any place. Provided, of course, that they have Internet, and the Teams app, in which they can select colleagues’ names from the list.

Not only close colleagues can be reached from the app but also students, anyone in fact. The app allows users to enter telephone numbers (including mobile phone numbers)

Apart from the advantages, are there any limitations to making phone calls using Teams? “For some users, it may take some getting used to, certainly if they have never used the app.”

Landline telephones won’t disappear entirely, by the way. Staff who make a lot of phone calls, such as secretaries, can apply for a landline telephone, says Snijders. “These are devices that are supported by MS Teams. You will still see them also in meeting rooms and at receptions.”
