Utrecht (classic universities) and Wageningen (other universities) maintain their leading positions.
The editors of the Keuzegids have drawn up a list of what they consider the best university bachelor’s study programmes in the Netherlands. They base themselves on the assessments of more than 286 thousand students who completed the National Student Survey this spring. They gave a grade for the content of their programmes, their lecturers, testing, the atmosphere, and the way in which they were prepared for their careers. The ranking is also based on how many students enrol for the second year, and whether they graduated within four years.
Programmes that score more than 75 points, may call themselves ‘top study programmes’. This was the case for six Maastricht bachelors’: Econometrics, Medicine, Global Studies, Circular Engineering and the University Colleges in Maastricht and Venlo. The Science Programme joined this list last year, but now failed to meet the criterion, with 71 points. The study programme is still the best in the country in its category. The same applies to Psychology, Data Science, and Arts and Culture, who all ended up in first place (sometimes a shared one).
The Maastricht Faculty of Law was less successful. Dutch Law scores poorly and only received 37 points. This means that the programme ended up in tenth place and only leaves VU in Amsterdam behind it. The students are especially dissatisfied about testing, but also find the content and the atmosphere below par. European Law School manages to gain 46 points, but despite that doesn’t manage to get any further than the last place in the ranking of international bachelor’s programmes of Law.
Maastricht students of Biomedical Sciences are also less satisfied than to their peers elsewhere in the country, the programme ending up in last place with 51 points. Lecturers, testing and the continuation into second year are the weakest aspects here. At the School of Business and Economics, Business Engineering is the weakest programme. The content was regarded as poor, just like the lecturers and testing, so it yielded 51 points and ended up in last place.
Lastly, the Keuzegids shows that UM is still by far the most international university in the Netherlands. Of the ten study programmes with the most international students, six are from Maastricht. In addition, the English spoken by lecturers here received the best assessment, with a 4.3 out of 5 (which has been the case for years).
