The complex now summarily referred to as "Tapijn" is a former military barracks (1919-2010). From 2015, the buildings and the surrounding grounds were commissioned by Maastricht University and each of them was adapted to the new requirements. The corona crisis prevented an official opening. Hence, Saturday, Sept. 9, the transformation can still be observed. There will be guided tours of the grounds about various functions the buildings have fulfilled, and lectures on the general history of the Tapijnkazerne will take place in the main building, in both Dutch and English.
The Kruithuis, located next to the SBE (School of Business and Economics) on Tongersestraat, served in the 17th century as a powder magazine for the cannons set up on the city rampart. Inside, an exhibition on all the gunpowder houses that used to stand in Maastricht will be on display this Saturday. In addition, the Maastricht Historical Artillery Association will give a demonstration outside next to the powder house. Shots literally will be fired this time.
