MAASTRICHT. "Free Palestine" and "Stop genocide": pro-Palestinian slogans were found daubed on the wall and doormat at the main entrance of the UM administration building on the Minderbroedersberg this morning. Pasted on the door were posters with pictures of residents of the Palestinian territories: "Murdered by Israel," was written above them. The slogans and posters were removed during the morning.

UM does not know who affixed them or what the purpose of the action was, spokesman Koen Augustijn said when asked. As is customary in cases of damage or vandalism, the university has reported the incident to the police, he adds.

Last month, similar graffiti was already applied to the steps in front of the entrance to University College Maastricht (UCM) and to a building opposite the entrance to the law school. Last week, UCM was occupied by students and people from outside. Pro-Palestinian posters also recently surfaced in university buildings.

One of the demands of the "occupiers": a statement in which the university condemns Israeli action in Gaza. Board President Rianne Letschert was asked about this earlier in a University Council meeting. She replied that a statement cannot do justice to all the nuances and that dialogue about the conflict should be conducted in the faculties.

Asked if the board is still considering coming out with a statement after last week's outcry, Augustijn replied, "The board will certainly return to the subject. In doing so, we will always keep the interests of the entire UM community in mind."
