Fuchs is field study co-ordinator of the bachelor’s of Global Studies, but according to his colleagues this official title does not do justice “to how essential his role is” within the bachelor’s programme. In their praising letter of nomination, they write that they are hoping the award “will show this exceptional colleague and lecturer that his potential is seen and valued”.
And that exceptional colleague himself? In his very modest comment to Observant, he states that he himself would have nominated someone else. He finds the compliments from his colleagues “really great” and “it is nice to be appreciated,” but “I don’t do my work because I want to win an award. I have a passion for teaching and for the students. It is great to see them grow, it makes me feel proud”.
By the way, the UM Award is normally awarded to two people from UM. The second prize winner, however, chose to remain anonymous and not to accept the award, said vice president Nick Bos.
