One-off energy cost contribution of 400 euro for foreign students in Maastricht

How many students will be eligible, the city does not know

MAASTRICHT. Foreign students who are not eligible for a subsidy towards energy costs via student financier DUO, can – as of Friday – apply for a one-off 400-euro subsidy from the city of Maastricht.

The Municipal Executive announced the “safety net ruling” in November 2023. Finalising the arrangement turned out to be more complicated than initially thought, they said on Tuesday during the press hour in the city hall on the Markt: the city authorities were dependent on information from DUO, who took their time.

The amount is equal to the one-off supplement that other students automatically received from DUO at the beginning of this year.

Income limit

The Maastricht ruling applies to foreign students who live in the Maastricht municipality and study full-time. They need to apply via the city website – which will be possible until 30 June. There is an income limit: anyone who earns more than 1,340 euro per month, will not be eligible. Savings will also be taken into consideration, if these amount to more than 1,700 euro.

Exactly how many students will be eligible for the ruling, the city could not say. Alderman Alain Garnier estimates the number of foreign students in the city at about 9,500, “but we are not aware of their financial situation.”
