Piano at FPN more of a nuisance than a joy

Receptionists are driven mad by open space echos

25-09-2024 · Background

A piano for the faculty – the board of the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroschience (FPN) was immediately in favour of the idea from the students. The instrument was placed near the walkway between Universiteitssingel 40 and 50 on the left-hand side. However, in addition to the hoped-for “cosy and homey atmosphere”, it has also proved to be a nuisance.

The piano is currently in the hall which flows naturally into the university restaurant at Universiteitssingel 40. It is a place buzzing with noise, including the noise that passes through the floor from the level below, where there are seating areas for students. Add in the reverberating sound of tinkling and it’s a recipe for complaints, in this case from the receptionists who are forced to work in the ‘noise’ all day.

Adjusting the hours people are allowed to play the piano didn’t help, FPN Director Cerien Streefland told the Faculty Council last Thursday. She thinks there’s only one solution: the piano has to go. But where, she asked the council. Two options were proposed: a communal space at Endepolsdomein 150, the former MSM building, away from reception, and the Student Service Centre in the city centre. “Although they also have a desk,” Streefland said. Should neither option be feasible, she has got one other possible solution: raffle the piano among the students.
