Maastricht strike day moved

Demonstrators don't want to compete for attention with other protests

MAASTRICHT. The day of strikes planned at Maastricht University, part of the strike relay taking place across the Netherlands against the cuts to higher education, has been moved from Tuesday, 15 April to Wednesday, 16 April. In this way, they hope to avoid it getting lost amongst other protests.

The middle of April is a busy time for the unions. There are a number of strikes planned in different industries: for example, in hospitals, there will a one-day strike of all non-emergency care in a bid for better pay. With that information in mind, there was a vote during last Thursday’s ‘planning day’ for the strike in Maastricht to decide on a new date that wouldn’t coincide with any other major protests.

The plans for 16 April include a joint march, speeches and whistling protests. Until that time, the organisation (the unions FNV and AOb, action group WOinActie, and the Maastricht student union MOSA) asks people to sign a letter in solidarity with the cause: stopping the budget cuts.
