Miss Netherlands, no Miss Universe

15-09-2011

The recently graduated Maastricht psychology student Kelly Weekers did not win the Miss Universe 2011 title in Brazil last Monday. Her fellow-contestant from Angola, Leila Lopes, carried off the palm.

Kelly Weekers, who was previously regarded as a potential winner, ended among the first sixteen out of a total of 89 candidates. The last time the Netherlands ended in the top 16, was in 2002.

The 22-year-old bachelor’s graduate was voted Miss Limburg last spring and obtained the title of Miss Netherlands in the Summer. To a reporter from De Telegraaf, she showed to be far from disappointed on Monday evening. “It would have been a wonderful opportunity, but this is fine. I will be Miss Netherlands for a whole year and there will be lots of things coming my way. I am glad that I can go back to my family again,” she said.

Just after her Miss Limburg election in Spring, Observant asked her what she would do if she had to choose between a career as a model or a psychologist. “Psychologist. I really like the modelling work, you travel a lot, see a lot, last weekend I was still in Barcelona for shows, but I cannot gain satisfaction from that for the rest of my life. I want to have a family and children. The two do not go together. Besides, psychology is far too interesting. You learn so much about people. I am now doing my last year of the bachelor’s and at the same time the transition course for health sciences. I will be doing the master’s of Mental Health next year – I have already been accepted – specialising in child and youth psychopathology.” It remains to be seen whether this will actually happen, because the agenda of a Miss Netherlands is always full.
