Trumpets, cold drinks and hot beats

Opening INKOM 2023

22-08-2023 · Reportage

MAASTRICHT. Bass pumps from the speakers next to the big stage in the city park near Tapijn as INKOM, the annual introduction week for students of UM and Hogeschool Zuyd, officially opens at 8pm on Monday evening.

Hundreds of first-year students celebrate their arrival in Maastricht and the impending start of their studies. Here and there, the booze does its work: not everyone is equally intelligible. Lara van Wuijtswinkel, fortunately, is. The 18-year-old future medical student from the Dutch province of Brabant is positively surprised: "There is a warm atmosphere, and I think it is very well organised. Also, the brochure on sexual violence, which everyone received, is a sign for me that the subject is important for the university, so I also feel safe." For Australian Jeremy Crunc (21) and Patrick Horan (23), both soon to start at School of Business and Economics, one thing is particularly important besides the good atmosphere: "We both play trumpet, and it's super nice to then hear that sound again here. We didn't expect that". But here and there, there is also some criticism of the event. Noor Peters (19), medical student: "You have to wait a very long time for the drinks, which is a shame. But other than that, I think it's really nice."
