The first impression that Croatian Lina Medica (19) had when she saw Maastricht was positive: "Very neat, international and everything is close by. For me, the ideal city to study." Inspired by her mother, who is a lawyer, Medica also chose the Bachelor of European Law in Maastricht because of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, and because it is not far from the European institutions in Brussels or Luxembourg. The European Union is important to Medica because she sees great opportunities for her personal future in it. After she completes her studies, the first-year student also wants to work for the EU. She is thus in the right place in Maastricht, she says. But when it comes to Dutch culture, Medica looks a bit sad: "They only eat a sandwich in the afternoon, and dinner is very early. In my culture, that's not possible, and I'm not used to it. So I plan to always cook something and then take it with me for lunch." Dutch is not something Medica wants to learn, at least in the short term. "I can already speak a little German, but Dutch is different again. And it's not easy to learn at all."
