Learning Dutch (2)

10-12-2009 -

In line with the student representatives of the University Council we consider it highly desirable that students integrate into their Dutch environment. In contrast to Gerard Mols, we conceive of language as an essential tool in achieving this.

Recognising the fact that this discourse was initiated in an article using the Dutch language, we feel compelled to address the entire student body. The English language is hence used as a means to incorporate those who do not master the Dutch language (yet), as we feel it is their concern too.

At this point it is redundant to proof the international character of our student body. The challenges arising from this international 'being' are evident. As proven in countless cases, a considerable part of the non-Dutch student population is not as well integrated as is desired by all that are affected. Language is integral in the process of communication, and integration without communication is utopian. On both the student's as well as the university's side there is a clear willingness to take up these challenges. This should be met with the commitment from the university to easily accessible and affordable Dutch language courses; and not with its blunt denial. The Dutch language has then the chance of taking up its unifying role in the integration process.

Moreover, concerning the argument made on the possibility to follow language courses in Aachen and Eindhoven, one cannot seriously support the idea of sending students on a two hour journey for a language class. In this scenario, the commute takes at least as long as the lesson itself. The current emphasis around the desired proximity of UM exam locations indicates the arbitrariness of this thought. Henceforth, to sufficiently tackle the integration challenge, the UM should make Dutch language education accessible to every willing student.
