Student integration

24-6-2010 -

I read your recent article on the integration of international students at Maastricht University with great interest (Observant 31). However, to my surprise, the article did not discuss the integration of “international students” reflected in the accompanying photograph. Instead, it was on the integration of German students who represent the largest non-Dutch student community in this university. I find the use of the photograph unsuitable, if not misleading. The photograph misleads the reader to think that international students, especially the non-Europeans portrayed in the photograph, are segregated based on nationality when in actual fact, you are referring specifically to the German student community. Due to the small numbers of non-German international students by nationality (e.g. my nationality, Malaysian), we are not at all segregated by nationality. I also doubt if most non-German international students mind the “German fortress” described in your article.

Thank you for your attention so far. I hope that the Observant’s future use of accompanying photographs will more accurately reflect the content of the article.
